Steering Rack Assemblies
Steering rack assemblies are usually supplied without track rod ends, although in the case of reconditioned racks this may vary according to the supplier and their current production policy - please contact us to confirm the state of build. Reconditioned racks are available exhange, which means a surcharge will be levied at the time of purchase if you cannot offer us an old unit in rebuildable condition. The surcharge will be refunded if you can return an old unit to us later.

Sport Pack, Cooper Sport, Silverstone and Knightsbridge Minis from the 1990s used a limited travel steering rack to avoid the 13" wheels fouling the bodywork:

High ratio competition racks are available for 1967 on models without 13" wheels. These racks provide 2.2 turns from lock to lock, instead of the usual 2.7 turns:

Steering Rack Components
Limited amounts of repair work may be undertaken at home on Mini steering racks. If anything major is required then purchasing a new or reconditioned rack assembly is the only sensible (not to mention cost-effective) option. Most Mini enthusiasts would say there's only two types of steering rack: Mk I and Mk II onwards (after all, that's basically what we list above). Not quite true. Yes, you can fit any age Mk II onwards rack to any Mk II onwards car, but there have been literally dozens of different internal parts used over the years, most of which are not interchangeable with each other and just as many are no longer available. Before you knew it, you'd be buying half of the internal parts of a steering rack - at a greater cost than a complete new rack - just to replace a couple of items. As a result, only parts which fit all or most racks are shown here.

Even the external parts can differ - many (but not all) track rod ends in recent years have had a metric rather than imperial threaded pin, so check the thread if you're just replacing the nyloc nut. Lastly, the steering rack gaiters vary, depending on the shape of rack housing - there are three types of gaiter: short (5") rubber, long (7") plastic, or long (7") with different diameters at the large ends. Again, check what you have fitted before buying new ones.
