Seat Belts
Seat belts are a very, very emotive subject for classic car owners. Every owner of a Mk I or Mk II Mini, for example, would love to be able to bolt nice new Kangol Magnet seat belts (remember them - the ones with the little foil BMC rosette badge on the clasp - of course you do; every 1960s car owner does) into their freshly restored car. Instead, unless they can search out good original items at an autojumble or whatever, owners begrudgingly have to fit modern universal-fitting seat belts that stand out like a sore thumb instead, because that's all that is available. Incidentally, an often forgotten fact is that seat belts were always fitted by the dealer, not the factory, prior to 1971. While the car's manufacturer published a list of recommended seat belts for their model range, in practice the dealers sometimes didn't adhere to the recommendations and fitted something else. So saying what's correct for your car is a very tricky statement to make.

Of course owners hate having to buy modern-style seat belts that don't look right in their old cars, and classic car specialists get little satisfaction from selling them either. Unfortunately though, a 30 year old seat belt design cannot be simply reintroduced to the market on the strength of 30 year old safety compliance certificates - the whole testing and homologation process has to be gone through again, and everyone involved gets twitchy feet about potential liability from an old safety-critical product that may not, when it comes to the crunch (literally), perform as effectively as a modern one.

If a car manufacturer is forced for one reason or another to reintroduce the correct seat belt for an older model, as happened a few years ago, the development and testing that has to take place before production can start is tortuous indeed, and - you guessed it - eyewateringly expensive (to the point of the manufacturer making a large financial loss in the process). Reintroducing old seat belts is something that simply never occurs, unless it is forced by threat of litigation.

So the reality for Mini owners is this:
Pre-1980 Minis - Unless you have a real stroke of luck and fall upon some good original seat belts somewhere, you will have to fit modern-style replacements.
1980-90 Minis - A handful of original seat belts are still available (usually in the less popular colours); otherwise you will need replacement items.
1990 On Minis - Availability of original seat belts is better than for the previous thirty years of Minis, but it's not at all good and it's getting worse.
Modified Minis - You don't mind modern replacement seat belts, or you're going to fit 3 or 4 point competition harnesses anyway.

The Securon seat belts offered by us are the best possible replacements you could find. While being semi-universal types, they were developed with the Mini very much in mind and utilise original mounting points. They are established designs that have served very well the classic car market place in particular.

Securon Replacement Front Seat Belts 1959-96
None of these seat belts are suitable for 1997 on Minis, which have pre-tensioners working in co-ordination with the SRS airbag system.

Rear Seat Belt Mounting Kit
In order to fit rear seat belts to pre-1995 Minis not already so equipped, mounting points will have to be fitted. Somerford Mini takes the strain out of working out what needs to be welded to the car's body with this money-saving kit including all required original factory mounting brackets (seat brace sides x 2, seat brace centre and C post x 2). Use of these brackets enables two rear seat belts to be fitted without the need to alter or change interior trim in the rear of your Mini.
