Oil Coolers

Fitting an oil cooler is an effective and relatively easy way to assist engine cooling on a Mini especially for higher capacity and high-performance engines.  Detailed in this section are the original, factory-fitted oil cooler systems, plus the systems and components first marketed by the factory’s Special Tuning department which have remained very popular Mini accessories for the last 30 odd years, long after the demise of the department.

Many useful add-on components for oil coolers have also been developed over the years such as oil temperature sender units and temperature gauges, oil cooler thermostats and hoses for specialist applications.  While space precludes their inclusion in this section, they are available from Somerford Mini.  We would be pleased to advise customers on the use of these components and to help them build up the optimum oil cooler system for their Mini.

The first factory fitted Mini oil cooler was mounted vertically below the dynamo on the forward side of the engine.  While not quite as effective as later horizontally mounted oil coolers, the vertically mounted item is visually correct for owners concerned about originality on an early 1960’s Mini.  It is also the only oil cooler which can be fitted to the Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornet and Mini Vans and Pick Up’s with original radiator grilles.
