Offset Instruments, 1969-89
The parts listed in this section are for the instrument packs manufactured by Smiths and latterly Lucas, from 1969-89. From late 1989 onwards, Minis used instruments which, while appearing at first glance to be a continuation of the Smiths design, were in many ways quite different in construction and operation. These later instruments, manufactured by Nippon Seiki, are detailed in the next section.

Speedometers
These speedometers are calibrated for use on the models shown, so long as original wheel and tyre dimensions are also used and the original ratio final drive (differential) is fitted. Any variation from standard wheel dimensions or final drive ratio will probably - unless you are very careful - change the overall gearing of the car and will result in the speedometer requiring recalibration.

Some speedometers are available as outright new purchases. Others are not and in these instances a reconditioned unit may be offered, in exchange for your old speedometer assembly. This process is dependent on your old speedometer being in a reconditionable state; if it isn't, or you have no old speedometer to exchange, a surcharge will be levied. To identify your old speedometer before ordering a replacement, you will find an 'SN' number in small print on the face of the instrument. This is the original Smiths Instruments part number, and it can be cross-referenced to the BMC/BL/Rover part number shown below. By the way, the 'TPM' figure also displayed in small print on the face indicates the number of turns per mile the speedometer is calibrated for. Two different speedometers with the same TPM figure will work just as effectively on the same car.
