Single Point Injection
Single Point Injection ('SPi') is a simplified version of fuel injection using a single injector in the throttle housing or throttle body - hence the system's other name, Throttle Body Injection, or 'TBi'. It was adopted on several Rover models at the start of the 1990s, being a cost-effective means of cleaning up exhaust emissions on previously carburetter fitted vehicles. Throughout this catalogue you will see this system referred to as SPi rather than TBi, because that's the name recognised by the vast majority of customers.

The first example of fuel injection on the Mini was the SPi Cooper of 1991; the other Mayfair and Sprite models in the Mini range changed from carburetter to the Cooper's SPi system in 1994, albeit using a slightly downrated 'standard performance' form. From 1997 the Multi Point Injection (MPi) system was specified for all markets except Japan, which retained SPi through to the end of production.
