Multi Point Injection |
As emissions regulations became ever more stringent through the 1990s, Rover had to re-engineer their Single Point Injection (SPi) fitted models to accept more conventional and more efficient injection systems, which deleted the single injector from the throttle body in favour of multiple injectors mounted on a fuel rail. The Mini thus became the proud owner of two injectors in a system known sometimes as Twin Point, although most of the market place refers to it as Multi Point Injection ('MPi'). From 1997 the MPi system was specified for Minis in all markets except Japan, which retained SPi through to the end of production. |

The original factory MPi throttle body, being plastic, tends to suffer from distortion and cracking (it is in a rather warm place, after all). An alloy bodied replacement throttle body of course suffers neither of these problems, and actually benefits from the fact that the throttle valve can open further. A larger 52mm bore version of the alloy body is also available, providing a very useful power increase of up to 10%. Taking only about thirty minutes to install, neither of the alloy throttle bodies require adjustments to be made to the engine's electronic control unit. However ECU adjustment would probably be necessary to realise full potential if using the large bore throttle body together with other engine or exhaust modifications. |
