Fuel Pumps
Carburetter-fitted Minis used both electric and mechanical fuel pumps. Positive earth cars up to 1969 (1970 for vans and Pick Ups) had an electric pump mounted on the rear subframe, while the later negative earth models used a mechanical pump mounted on the dash side of the engine.

The exact change point when the AUA103 type fuel pump was replaced in production with the SP and AUF200 Series type pumps is unknown, but the change is generally thought to have taken place progressively over the different Mini models during 1960. The AUA103 type pump has been out of production for many years (though new ones do surface from time to time - contact us to see if we have one if you particularly want one) and has been replaced on many of the surviving very early Minis with an AUF200 series pump. Spare parts for AUA103 type pumps can also be very difficult to come by.

SP Type and AUF200 Series Electric Pumps

Several versions of these pumps were fitted in the 1960s which look broadly similar to each other but use differing internal parts. The earliest versions, AUA83, AUB83 and AUF200 had a flat plastic end cap without a breather valve; AUF201 wore a flat plastic end cap with a breather valve. The ultimate version, and the only one still in production, is AUF214 (which most electric fuel pump-fitted Minis will now have) which has a stepped plastic end cap with the breather valve.

Additionally, the SP type pumps AUA83 and AUB83 can be distinguished from all later pumps by their valves, which are positioned within the pump body. All later AUF200 series pumps have their valves and valve covers (nozzles) clamped to the outside of the pump body by a plate.

The parts you are likely to require for AUA83, AUB83, AUF200 and AUF201 are sometimes different in detail to those used in AUF214 and some are not available. We often advise replacement of early pumps with AUF214. Parts listed in this section are mostly appropriate for AUF214; where they also fit earlier versions, this information is also shown.

If you order an AUF214 pump you will receive an assembly containing the original 'points' or rocker and contact mechanism, which may be fitted to either a positive or negative earth car. Pumps with more modern electronic switching are also available by ordering AUF214EP for positive earth cars or AUF214EN for negative earth.

The rebuild kit includes a diaphragm, diaphragm gasket, armature spring and centralizing plate, rocker and contact blade assembly, rocker pivot pin, lead washer and end cover seal washer, inlet filter, inlet and outlet valves and sealing washers.

Rarely seen nowadays, this rubber washer fits under the flange of the coil housing and prevents the pump earthing connection from chafing on the pump mounting clip (usually part of the rubber strap squeezes out when the clip is tightened and does this job more than adequately).

The AUF705 fuel pump has not been in production for many years; some parts are still available to repair or rebuild it, but more often than not owners opt to replace the pump with the later AZX1818 pump assembly. If this is done, note that the gasket and distance piece AUB5012 shown here is unique to the AUF705 pump, so the later 12G4520B gasket and distance piece must also be fitted.

AZX1818, AZX1817 and WND10005 Mechanical Pumps

The early mechanical fuel pump AUF705 was replaced around 1979 by a sealed unit (not rebuildable) design, the first incarnation of which was pump part number AUF812. This in turn was replaced by the mildly modified design detailed here, AZX1818, at the end of the 1980s. AZX1818 is supplied by the factory for all previous mechanical fuel pump applications.

Special note for pre-1985 automatic gearbox Mini owners: If you are replacing your fuel pump with an AZX1818 unit, you will also need to change the gearbox kickdown control rod to the post-1985 design, part number DAM8393, because there is insufficient fuel pump clearance with the original rod.
