Mk IV Onwards Front Seats
1985 On
As with the previous 1969-85 models, the seat covers fitted to 1985 on Minis came in a huge variety of colour schemes and materials, not least because of the explosion of limited editions dreamt up by the factory. Unfortunately the non-availability of many of these fabrics and the near-impossibility of putting them back into manufacture means that for some Mini owners with tired seats the only options are to search out better condition secondhand seats or to retrim them to a different style.

For some models the latter option is reasonably easy, since several attractive alternative cloth seat covers are available and suggested here, but for others such as 1980s Mayfairs in particular a more radical make over of the car's seats and interior trim is likely to be required - for which we are on hand to provide advice and suggestions. Another important factor to consider when deciding on alternative seat covers for your Mini is that two seat frame designs were used during this period: 1985-92 (traditional Mini seat with headrest facility), and 1993 on (Metro-style bolstered seat), which was slightly modified from 1997 for SRS airbag equipment.

While at a push seat covers can be exchanged between the 1993-96 and 1997 on seat designs, this is definitely not the case with the pre-1993 seats.

Front Seat Covers
Important Notes for Ordering Seat Covers and Seat Cover Kits:
Please state model and year of your Mini, plus the colour(s) you require along with the part numbers when placing your order. This will help us to make sure you receive exactly the seat covers you need.

Note that because of the complex nature of seat colours and material types, only very popular items and colours (usually black) are held in stock - all others will be obtained to order, for which there will be a short lead time.

Mini City E, City and Sprite
1985-96
The Mini City seats from 1985-91 are recognisable by their Sawtooth fabric covers (not to be confused with the much finer Houndstooth pattern fabric of preceding models) and were offered in various colours, none of which are currently being manufactured. A similar situation exists with the 1995-96 Mini Sprite seats, faced in Smarties or Sonia cloth. If you own a City or Sprite from these periods, please refer to the notes under Mayfair for your options on (a) finding out which pieces may still be available from Rover parts outlets; (b) sourcing matching secondhand trim; or (c) completely retrimming the interior of your car to an alternative style or colour.

The very last City models of 1991 and the Sprite of 1992-94 were trimmed in Harlequin red, light blue, dark blue and grey flecked cloth with Granite vinyl, a colour scheme fortunately still in production today. Harlequin covers which fit 1985-92 seats are available, meaning that 1991 City models and 1992 Sprites are perfectly catered for. It also means that given the budget a down-at-heel Sawtooth trimmed City from 1985-91 can be easily revamped with a Harlequin interior - a very pleasing upgrade for that model. The Harlequin seat covers listed here will not however fit the larger Metro-type seats used in Sprites from 1993 onwards.

Mini Mayfair
1985-96
Seats for the Mayfair were trimmed in Chalkstripe velour (1985-88), Prism velour (1988-91), Chevron velour (1992-94) and Windsor velour (1995-96) - all rather academic from the spare parts point of view, since none are currently in production. This means that creating original style and colour seat cover kits is unfortunately not possible at time of writing.

One or two original Mayfair velour seat items are still held in stock by Rover, so if it's a specific seat cover you're after to replace a damaged item, contact us with the details of what you need and we'll see if your luck is in and it's still available. We ought to warn you that even if it is available, prices for Rover-supplied original fabric items are notoriously, ludicrously high. It's also worth saying here that new fabric components that have been knocking around in car parts warehouses for years stand a good chance of looking very dirty or dog-eared when you receive them, whether they're sealed in a protective plastic bag or not.

An alternative route is to try to source good condition secondhand seats - we will assist with this if you want us to. Finally - and we realise this won't appeal to some owners who'd rather retain their special Mayfair ambience - the other alternative is to retrim the interior to a different style. This is probably best achieved with one of the other luxurious styles of fabric or leather detailed in this section, or alternatively with one of the top quality replacement trim packages such as Newton Commercial's Monte Carlo range of kits. Again, if you choose the retrimming route for your car, we would be happy to advise you or source the trim for you.

Mini Cabriolet
1990-96
The Lamm Cabriolet used Mayfair seats, while the later Rover Mini Cabriolet seats wore unique covers, unfortunately incorporating the now defunct Mayfair Chevron (early models) and Windsor (later models) velour fabrics. Very little is still available for the seats in either Cabriolet from Rover and the chances of finding secondhand seats, particularly for the Rover Mini Cabriolet, are slim. If your seat covers need repairing or recovering, our advice would be to seek the assistance of a specialist automotive trimmer.

Mini Limited Editions
1985-99
If you have a Racing Green, Flame Red, Checkmate, Cooper (Rover Special Products limited edition), Seven or Cooper Sport (Classic 2000 end-of-production models), seat covers are still in production and listed in this section. However, for other limited editions the story is pretty much the same as the Mayfair and our advice would be similar - see above.

The unique fabrics used on many limited editions are uneconomic to put back into production now. The only thing we should add is that some limited editions used vinyl/leather covered seats without fabric inserts, which would make the job of replicating them considerably easier (assuming the vinyl and leather colour could be matched). In these instances it may be possible for a specialist automotive trimmer to help, or if you give us all the details we can enquire on our trim suppliers to see what they can do as a special order. Having said that, even if they can produce seat covers, the price is not likely to be cheap.

Mini Racing Green, Flame Red, Checkmate
1989-91
The limited edition Racing Green, Flame Red and Checkmate used Black Crayons seat covers which are still in production and listed here (the 'mainstream' carburetter Cooper of 1990-91 used Black Crayons fabric, too, but in a different seat cover design which is not currently in production). The good availability of seat covers and the corresponding interior trim panels makes Black Crayons an ideal interior trim package with which to make over and update a 1980s Mini City or Mayfair.

Cooper (RSP)
1990
Rover Special Products' limited edition Mini Cooper of 1990 used the very popular Black Lightning trim fabric first seen in the Mini Thirty the previous year. Black Lightning seat covers in the Cooper RSP style are available, and may also be used to recover Mini Thirty seats, although they do not have the '1959-1989' crests originally included for that model. The mainstream model carburetter Cooper which followed the RSP Cooper in 1990-91 was fitted with unique but now defunct Black Crayons seat covers; however since the seat construction is the same, Cooper RSP Black Lightning covers can be fitted as a very suitable alternative.

Cooper 1.3 (Carburetter)
1990-91
A popular but short-lived model, the carburetter Cooper came with a less expensive interior than the previous RSP car, including seats trimmed to a unique style with Black Crayons cloth. Now no longer available, these seat covers may be easily replaced with the earlier Cooper RSP Black Lightning items, or alternatively with the 1991-92 Cooper 1.3i Black Lightning covers listed below.

Cooper 1.3i
1991-95
The fuel injected Cooper of 1991 saw the return of Black Lightning seats, and the good news is that whether you have a 1991-92 car with the traditional design Mini seat frames or a 1993-95 model with the bigger Metro-style seats (which can be instantly identified by their twin stalk rather than single stalk headrests), all are catered for in the seat covers listed here. The 1991-92 Black Lightning seat covers will also replace the Black Crayons items to be found in the 1990-91 carburetter Cooper.

Cooper
1996-2000
From the 1996 model year onwards, the Mini Cooper was fitted as standard with Monaco seat covers, which had light stone beige flecked cloth facings with black leather inserts on the side bolsters. Additionally, a black with cream piping leather seat option was offered with Mini Cooper logo embossings. The seat construction was carried over from 1993-95 models and was slightly revised for 1997 because of the introduction of SRS airbag equipment. Both the Monaco and Black Leather seat covers are still in production.

Mini (Standard Model)
1997-2000
Known as simply 'Mini' from 1997 onwards, the replacement for the outgoing Sprite and Mayfair had as standard fitment Balmoral check cloth seat facings with light stone beige bolster inserts. While no longer in production, some of the Balmoral seat covers are still available at time of writing - please contact us with your requirements, and we will see what we can find. As a popular option, the Mini could be specified with Light Stone Beige leather seats with Ash Grey piping, the covers for which are still in production today.

Mini and Mini Cooper
Classic Leather Option
1997-2000
Along with all the other fun Mini options unveiled for the 1997 model year, the Classic Leather Option was probably one of the nicest. Four 1960s retro colours were specified and the seat cover designs were likewise intended to hark back to 1960s style, which they did rather well. All four colours of seat cover are available, as are the matching trim panels (see 'Interior Trim - Saloon 1985 On'), which means even if you didn't have it before in your 1997 on Mini, you can have it now.

The following colour schemes are available: Cumulus Grey with Red piping, Horizon Blue with White piping, Porcelain Green with Green piping or Tartan Red with Grey piping

Mini Seven, Knightsbridge, Cooper and Cooper Sport Classic 2000 Models
2000
Upon the advent of the end-of-production Classic 2000 range, seat colours and styles were revised on the Mini for the last time. The Seven received retro-look seat covers in Red leather with light stone beige Chopsticks cloth, the Knightsbridge (sold in limited numbers in mainland Europe only) got Alpaca leather, the Cooper got Black leather with black and silver Ravioli cloth and the Cooper Sport got Black and Nickel Silver leather.

The Mini Seven Red leather with Chopsticks cloth seat covers are still in production, as are the Cooper Sport Black and Nickel Silver leather items. Knightsbridge Alpaca leather and Cooper Black leather with Ravioli cloth seat cover kits are not currently being produced, but some components are still available through Rover parts stockists. If you contact us with the exact details, we will ascertain availability and price for the components you want and get them in for you as a special order if required.

1993 On
The seat described here is the larger Metro-style seat fitted from 1993 on. This design may be recognised by its twin stalk headrest, which bangs against the windscreen when you tip the seat forward and gets in the way when you try to get in the back of the car (because the seat, while lovely and plush, is really too big for a Mini!)... The seat was modified for 1997 because of the SRS airbag and restraint systems used in the Mini from then onwards.
