Recirculatory Heater |
The recirculatory heater was so called because it received air only from the cabin and did not have a duct supplying it with fresh air from outside the vehicle. |
It is most commonly to be found on very early Minis, since it was gradually phased out from 1963 onwards. In theory, lowly 850 Saloons and some export |
1000 saloons retained the recirculatory heater as standard fitment until the early 1970s (in reality, most customers asked for the optional fresh air heater |
instead), while Vans and Pick Ups persisted with it all the way through until the end of the 1970s. Very occasionally 'new old stock' late-model Van and Pick |
Up heaters come to light in dusty warehouses, but usually it is up to you to restore your old heater unit. The radiator or 'matrix' can be replaced as can the |
fan motor; we offer a reconditioning service for your matrix should you prefer it. Right hand drive and left hand drive heaters differ in the position of the matrix |
inlet and outlet pipes - however the matrix is the same, and is simply mounted different ways round in the RHD and LHD heaters. |
Often referred to as the 'fug-stirrer', the recirculatory heater would make already stale cabin air quite revolting after a prolonged drive, while its demisting |
abilities were non-existant (actually, it often made visibility worse). One for the purists and masochists only! Although ostensibly the same right the way |
through production, detail changes did occur - most importantly to the heater casing at the start of 1960 (the 1959-60 heaters not even |
having demister flaps to divert all of the airflow to the windscreen) and in 1969 (Saloons) and 1970 (Vans and Pick Ups) when the change was made from |
positive to negative earth electrical systems. Note that the fan motor changed on each occasion. All recirculatory heaters can be interchanged as complete |
assemblies, so long as the vehicle's electrical system polarity is observed and the fan motor wiring modified to suit if necessary. You wouldn't want the fan |
going backwards, would you? |

Fresh Air Ventilating Units |
Fresh air ventilating units were offered as an option to non-heater fitted cars, usually those destined for warmer climates. They are all based on the 1963 on metal or plastic bodied fresh air heaters, being more or less a heater unit with the fan and motor but without the heating matrix and water plumbing. |
The 1969 on unit used in Saloons and Estates was modified to include a second fan and similar controls to concurrent heater-fitted models. |
