Fresh Air Heater Units
Care must be taken to positively identify your type of heater before ordering parts; while many parts are shared between heater designs that look outwardly similar, some parts are in fact unique to each design. Industrial strife in UK factories during the 1970s meant that different versions of the Saloon and Estate heater were triple-sourced from different supplying factories at the same time, as insurance against lost production! This situation created a bit of a minefield as regards matching the right parts to the right heater - particularly where fan motors are concerned. You have been warned.

Plastic or Metal Fresh Air Heater with Single Speed Fan
Saloon and Estate 1969-84
Van and Pick Up 1980 approx. to 1984
Cold climate markets - Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland - in the 1970s received uprated fan motor versions of the standard heater. In fact, by 1978 Canada was taking a heater with separate blower unit, quite removed from the standard item. In all other respects the cold climates heaters accept the parts listed here.

Note that some early 1970s 850 Saloons and export 1000 Saloons were theoretically equipped with a recirculatory heater as standard rather than the fresh air heater described here (virtually all customers opted for the fresh air unit anyway!). Recirculatory heaters are detailed in the next section of this catalogue.

Metal Fresh Air Heater with Single Speed Fan
1984-92
This heater may be identified from pre-1984 metal heaters in two ways. Firstly, the matrix inlet and outlet pipes are of 5/8" diameter (all previous heaters had 1/2" diameter pipework). Secondly, the inlet and outlet pipes are only 2" apart, measured from pipe centres - on pre-1984 heaters the distance between pipes is 6".

Plastic Fresh Air Heater with Single Speed Fan
1992-96
Apart from the fact that this heater is plastic-bodied as opposed to the previous metal bodied item, the other easy way to distinguish this heater is once again by the matrix inlet and outlet pipes. On 1992 on heaters, each pipe comes out of the side of the casing and turns upwards through a right angle; on pre-1992 heaters the pipes simply point straight out of the side of the casing. Also, the demister ducting was enlarged from 1 1/4" to 1 3/4" from 1992.

Plastic Fresh Air Heater with Two Speed Fan
1997 On
The 1997 on heater casing was a completely new design compared to the 1992-96 item, but in fact it shared some major componentry such as the fan and matrix. The biggest engineering difference was the inclusion of a resistor pack, allowing two speed fan control (and a two speed switch to suit, of course). One seemingly insignificant change was to a plastic rather than metal control panel, ending at last the vibrational 'zizzle' noise the Mini cabin had suffered for the last 27 years!

Metal Fresh Air Heater with 2.8kW Internal Fan or 4kW External Fan
Van and Pick Up 1969-80 Optional Equipment
New complete heater assemblies and heater casings are generally not available for the early style optional fresh air heaters fitted to Vans and Pick Ups
between 1969 and 1980 (by 1980 Vans and Pick Ups were finally being equipped with contemporary Saloon type fresh air heaters). Restoring your old unit is
usually the only choice in this instance (unless, as happens from time to time, someone unearths a 'new old stock' one). The radiator or 'matrix' can be
replaced as can the fan motor; we also offer a reconditioning service for your matrix should you prefer it.

The standard equipment heater for Vans and Pick Ups from 1969-80 approximately was the recirculatory heater, which is described in a later section of this catalogue.

Important Note: There were, believe it or not, five matrices used in these heaters, each with their own unique features. The major difference - the one might stop you from fitting your new matrix into the heater casing - is the dimension between the centres of the inlet and outlet pipes, which could be 115mm (matrix 17H8608) or 125mm (matrix 37H3930). You must measure this dimension on your old matrix before deciding which new one to order.
