Master Cylinder |
Single Line Brakes 1959-75 |
At first, drum braked Minis and Mini Coopers were fitted with 0.75" bore master cylinders, but to increase pressure (and thereby hopefully improve braking power) standard models were upgraded fairly quickly to a 0.70" bore cylinder, while Coopers received a 0.625" bore cylinder, losing their hydraulic booster at the same time. By the 1990s the 0.70" bore cylinder was being manufactured with a plastic reservoir rather than the original metal one, but thankfully pressure (and money) from the classic car industry were brought to bear on the manufacturer who now also produces an original style cylinder, complete with metal reservoir. |
The Cooper 0.625" bore cylinder is, at time of writing, no longer available, owners using the 0.70" cylinder as a replacement. Occasionally a few repair kits surface for the 0.625" cylinder, so we would advise Cooper owners to contact us to see what's available before purchasing a new 0.70" bore cylinder. |
Mini Cooper S and 1275 GT models with single line brakes now share the 1275 GT's master cylinder, in terms of what's available (or likely to be). While both the Mini Cooper S and 1275 GT were fitted with a couple of master cylinders during their production histories, they all share the same two features of the cylinder now available: 0.70" bore and 75mm high reservoir (noticeably taller than the standard Mini master cylinder reservoir). |
An important note to owners who've ascertained that they have a 0.70" bore master cylinder on their Mini which requires a rebuild using a master cylinder repair kit: Around 1977 the master cylinder manufacturer changed the design of the piston in the cylinder to incorporate two ring seals instead of the previous one ring seal and one cap (or blind) seal. Most - but not all - master cylinders available since that time are of the later design, which may be identified by a circle or groove cut into the body of the cylinder. Be sure to identify which cylinder you have before ordering internal parts for it! |

From the mid-1960s, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg required a master cylinder with an easy visual check for fluid level - the answer on the Mini was to screw a translucent plastic extension to the top of the reservoir. Also used as a Special Tuning part and still available today, this extension can of course be fitted to any single line master cylinder and not only provides an easy fluid level check but also usefully increases capacity of the reservoir for disc brake conversions etc. |

Dual line Brakes 1969-88 |
Initially Mini dual line braking systems, introduced because of local markets regulations, separated the front brakes from the rear. This system was later supplemented by two diagonally split systems, the layout of each depending on whether the car was RHD or LHD. In 1980 a complete return was made to a front/rear split system on Saloons, with the Estate, Van and Pick Up soldiering on for a couple more years with the diagonally split set up. Naturally, each system required a different master cylinder! Many diagonally split system Minis have subsequently been converted to the preferred later front/rear split system. |
Between 1976 and 1980 the braking system was converted from imperial to metric; thus the last diagonal split master cylinder is metric, along with most of the front/rear split master cylinders from that period onwards . |
Important note for owners replacing master cylinders on 1980-85 front/rear split Minis (plus 1275 GTs 1978-80): From 1985 on, a master cylinder with a revised lower pipe union size of 12mm was introduced, identifiable by a yellow plastic band. This cylinder, GMC227, is also used as the replacement for 1980-85 front/rear split cylinders, which means that a conversion brake pipe kit also has to be fitted if replacing an original cylinder on those years of Minis. |
