Subframe Complete Assemblies - Cone Suspension

Subframe complete assemblies were conceived as a quick and easy way of getting a new British Motor Heritage Mini bodyshell onto its wheels as a
rolling shell. Being suitable for any 1976 on models they are also however very convenient large assemblies to use during the major rebuild of a Mini,
dispensing with the need to transfer all the running gear over when replacing subframes.
Including all running gear components - on the front subframe this means all suspension, brakes, brake pipes and hoses, swivels, hubs and driveshafts,
while the rear includes suspension, brakes, brake pipes and hoses, brake cables and hubs - subframe complete assemblies are undoubtedly the most
cost-effective way of renewing everything mechanical on a Mini bar the engine, gearbox and steering rack.

Subframe Assemblies - Cone Suspension
Saloon 1959-64; 1969 on (Except Clubman Saloon and Cooper S MkIII, 1969-71)

At first glance the choice of subframes for 'dry' suspension cars seems bewildering; actually this is not really the case. As far as front subframes are
concerned, they essentially divide into pre-1976 (solid mounted) and post-1976 (rubber mounted), with a choice of manual or automatic gearbox.
Additionally, Fuel injected cars use a subframe with slightly repositioned engine mounting points and the 1997 on models include brackets for the front
mounted radiator. A 'Dry' rear subframe may be chosen with or without its mounting trunnions, and there are variations for the German market (for which
a towing eye was mandatory) and later 13" wheel fitted models (which necessitated a stronger subframe assembly process).

By comparison the range of subframes utilised on 'wet' suspension Minis is very simple indeed, as the period in which they were fitted was very short
and none of the estate, van or pick up derivatives ever used 'wet' suspension anyway.

'Solid' Front Subframe Mountings
1959-75
Bolting the subframe suspension towers to the dash crossmember of the car would seem to be a very simple process, but as you've probably
guessed already the Mini, being assembled with different detail parts at different factories in the 1960s, makes things rather more complex
than need be. Please read on...
Models up to 1962 approximately (i.e. those with the very earliest types of dash crossmember) could have the subframe towers held to the dash
crossmember by bolts or studs and lock tabs which initially didn't, and then did, allow access to the rubber cone compression nuts. After this time
bolts were used exclusively on cone (dry) suspension cars. Hydrolastic (wet) suspension subframes were also held to the dash crossmember by a
choice of bolts or studs. The only real consistency is that bolts were always used to attach the subframe towers on the Cooper and Cooper S.

'Rubber' to 'Solid' Front Subframe Mountings Conversion
Previously the reserve of the racing boys, these solid mountings to replace the original 1976 on rubber type are now available for all. They will
sharpen responses and remove the slight vagueness or lumpiness of 1976 on Mini handling (vague by comparison to earlier Minis, but not by comparison
to most cars!). Be aware that the trade off for using them is more noise and vibration (but let's face it, everything else that's going on in a low-flying Mini
would probably drown it out anyway...).
