Windscreens and Backlights
Important: Please note that the preferred method of supplying windscreens and window glass is for the customer to pre-arrange to pick it up, either directly from our premises or from our stand at one of the many shows we attend. Except in special circumstances we do not supply these items by mail order.

Mini saloon glazing came in clear, green, copper brown or bronze tinted versions, depending on the year and model of the car. Clear or green tinted specifications are widely available today; if your car (perhaps a late 1970s Mini Special?) is fitted with copper brown tinted glass, or the mid-1990s bronze tinted glass, please contact us for advice on current availability.

Windscreen
Unlike other windows around the Mini, the windscreen never changed in dimensions, and the same design was used across all the body styles. In fact, such was the demand for windscreen panels (one of the few pressings which remained the same on all models) that it has been said by several Castle Bromwich staff that while Mini presswork was undertaken at that plant, the windscreen panel tools never came out of the presses!

Back in the 60s and 70s Minis came out of the factory with windscreens made from toughened glass (the type that shatters into thousands of granules that get into every nook and cranny in the car...), switching over a period of time to the eminently more practical laminated type as market forces (and local regulations) dictated.

Today, we offer a range of laminated windscreens allowing the customer the choice of clear, tinted or top tinted glass. We can even supply a thoroughly up-to-date heated windscreen for those exasperated by the well-known inefficiencies of the Mini's demister system. If you are converting your car to a heated windscreen, you really should consider purchasing our harness and relay kit (part no. HWWK01) to take the guesswork out of wiring it up.

To be honest, while these two screen seals look and are different, in reality both can be used with laminated glass. However, if you intend to refit an original toughened windscreen, the early seal 14A8743 should be used.

Rear Quarter Lights
Saloon Models
Fixed (non-opening) rear quarter lights were a feature of basic specification Minis throughout production. The only design change came in 1969 when the glass was made taller to match the top line of the wind-up window door introduced at that time. Converting a car with fixed quarter lights to the opening type necessitates the welding of catch brackets (14A7775, listed with the opening quarter lights below) if they are not present to the rear pillars, unless the car is a later model with rear seat belt mountings on the rear pillars: these mountings were also used to attach the quarter light catches.

Opening rear quarter lights were manufactured to four different styles. MkI saloons up to 1966 used chromed quarter lights with piano hinges attaching them to the B posts; later MkIs and MkIIs from 1966 to 1969 used a simpler (cheaper!) stainless steel design which dispensed with the hinges, substituting pairs of spring steel tabs instead. Riley and Wolseley MkI and MkII saloons followed suit, according to the year of build.

Upon the advent of the Riley and Wolseley MkIII saloons in 1967, the stainless steel quarter light was modified to give a greater glass height to match the new, taller, wind-up door windows. This quarter light was carried over in turn to the new Mini MkIII in 1969 when it too received wind-up door windows. In 1971 the quarter light catch was changed from the previous cast metal toggle style to a smoother pressed steel design, and that's how opening quarter lights remained for the rest of the Mini's production life.

Opening Stainless Rear Quarter Lights

A few models in the 1990s had black quarter light frames instead of the more usual bright finish. These frames are not available. Similarly, some 1970s models were fitted with quarter light seals coloured to match the interior trim, rather than the customary black. Please contact us to enquire on current availability of these coloured seals.

Rear Quarter Lights
Rover Mini Cabriolet, 1993-96
