Carburetter Assemblies
The single HS4 (1 1/2" diameter) carburetter installation was first fitted to automatic gearbox Minis in 1964. The 1275 GT had a single HS4 from its launch in 1969, but the other manual gearbox Minis only received the HS4 carburetter in 1974. From that year up until 1992, all Minis except the 1990-91 Cooper had a single HS4 installation.
The carburetters listed here fall into two distinct types: those with fixed metering needles (earlier versions) and those with 'swing' or biased needles which became prevalent during the early 1970s as emissions regulations took force.
This section details HS4 carburetters with conventional, non-temperature compensating jets, fitted between 1964 and 1977. The later design of HS4 with temperature compensating 'Capstat' (also known as Waxstat) jets, fitted between 1975 and 1992, can be found in the next section. Identification of your HS4 is absolutely necessary before ordering parts. It should be a simple matter of looking at the aluminium tag attached to one of the float chamber lid screws; the number stamped on the tag should correspond to one of the carburetter part numbers listed here. Failing that, if the tag is missing, a study of the applications below will help.
