Carburetter Assemblies
For the short period (1990-91) before it was equipped with fuel injection, the 1275cc Mini Cooper engine sported a single HIF 44 (44mm diameter) carburetter, easily identifiable from an HS4 carburetter by its integral float chamber housed in the bottom of the carburetter body casting. When the Mini Mayfair and Sprite (nee City) exchanged their 998cc engines for 'standard performance' 1275cc versions in 1992, they too received an HIF type carburetter - albeit slightly smaller, the HIF 38 (38mm diameter). They retained this carburetter installation until 1994 when, like the Cooper had been three years before, they were equipped with fuel injection.

Identification of your HIF carburetter is absolutely necessary before ordering parts. It should be a simple matter of looking at the aluminium tag attached to one of the suction chamber screws; the number stamped on the tag should correspond to one of the carburetter part numbers listed here. Failing that, if the tag is missing, a study of the applications below will help.
